Kingston in Motion - Robert Bruce Memorial Parking Garage
Kingston in Motion is a large scale 10-panel public mural located on Bagot Street in downtown Kingston. Located above the Robert Bruce Memorial Parking Garage, the project was commissioned by the City of Kingston and funded by Kingston’s Parking Operations, Licensing, and Enforcement Department as part of the city’s Public Art Program. Installed in September 2025, Kingston in Motion features stylized figures that capture both movement and stillness, reflecting the daily rhythms of the Robert Bruce Memorial Parking Garage, a place where people pause, pass through, and gather. Cyclists, skateboarders, and pedestrians are contrasted with those who sit, stroll, or share goodbyes. At its center, a figure pauses to “smell the flowers,” encouraging rest amid the city’s pace.
The mural’s visual language is site-specific, drawing textures and tones directly from its surroundings. Butter-yellow paneling, weathered brick, and the distinctive blue, orange, and white of Kingston Transit anchor the work in place. In the third panel, the garage’s split-level architecture is mirrored by a dividing pathway, separating figures travelling in opposite directions. Together, the panels weave a narrative of Kingston’s diverse community. Figures embody a wide spectrum of age, gender, orientation, race, ability, and cultural background, an inclusive vision rooted in my identity as the child of lesbian mothers. Local references further ground the work: a Queen’s student with a tri-colour backpack, Alby the squirrel familiar to campus-goers, a uniformed bus driver, and a departing passenger whose fresh tattoo gestures toward Kingston’s creative community. Ultimately, Kingston in Motion is a celebration of recognition and belonging, transforming everyday moments into a vibrant landmark that feels distinctly Kingston.
